Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education (FDMSE), Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Coimbatore Campus, Department of Hearing Impairment, celebrated ‘World Hearing Day – 2024’ on 5th March, 2024. Based on the theme of WHO 2024, Changing Mindsets, the department organized a one-day Sensitization Programme for the parents on ‘Ear and Hearing Care’ for all.

The inauguration started by invoking the blessings of Gurumaharaj with a prayer song. Mrs. M. Sumathi, Asst. Professor in Special Education, welcomed the gathering.  Dr. Angusamy A., MBBS, DLO – ENT Coimbatore was the Chief Guest of the inaugural function. In his chief guest address, he quoted his experiences of importance of sense organs and listening process. Swami Buddhidanadaji Maharaj, Assistant Administrative Head, FDMSE, RKMVERI delivered the presidential address and Dr. N. Muthaiah, Dean, School of Rehabilitation and Sports Science, RKMVERI presented the Special Address. Dr. Jignya Shah, Asst. Professor in Special Education and the coordinator, oriented the participants about the objectives and schedule of the training programme. Mrs. M. Senthilvani, Asst. Professor in Special Education, proposed the vote of thanks. The participants were parents of children with special needs, who are the primary stakeholders. In total 49 parents of children with various disabilities participated (48 female and a male parents of children with disabilities) in the programme.

The first session of the day was dealt by the chief guest Dr. Angusamy A., MBBS, DLO – ENT Coimbatore. He shared his expertise and gave valuable inputs on’ Ear and Hearing Care’ of children with special needs. Doctor also gave inputs on improving access and reducing the cost of unaddressed hearing loss. Doctor provided response to the questions asked by the individual parents. The second session was followed by Ms. Rakeshwari Asst. Professor Arts and Science College having expertise in Food Science and Nutrition and Sports Nutrition. She discussed the need and importance of healthy food and how to develop healthy food habits among young children. She provided inputs for various areas on health care and nutrition.

Last session of the one day sensitization programme ended with the discussions and sharing the feedback by the participants. This was first initiative taken by inviting ENT doctor. The parents were satisfied having discussion with ENT doctor on various issues. They suggested conducting more training programs focusing on awareness and strategies to develop communications for the children having associated problems. On the whole, the sensitization programme was useful for all the participants.
