About the Faculty of Agriculture, Rural and Tribal Development (ARTD)

 

The Faculty of Agriculture, Rural and Tribal Development (or Faculty of ARTD ), earlier known as Faculty for Agriculture Education and Research (or FAR) under the Coimbatore Campus of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (Deemed University), or RKMVERI, is established to cater to the needs of students, who wish to pursue graduation and post-graduation in rural and tribal development, by way of imparting quality knowledge through values-based education system, adopted with the growing and changing needs of the society and the rural community. In order to address the challenging tasks emerging in the field of rural and tribal development, a FIVE year Integrated M.Sc. in ‘Integrated Rural and Tribal Development’ programme and a M.A. / M.Sc. in Rural Development and Management programme have been started from the session 2022-23 at the Faculty of ARTD.

Similar programmes are also offered at the RKMVERI’s Ranchi campus and Narendrapur campus.


RKMVERI (Deemed University), headquartered at Belur Math, Howrah, West Bengal, was started in 2005 by the well known world-wide organization Ramakrishna Mission (headquartered at Belur, Howrah, West Bengal). RKMVERI has off-campuses at Narendrapur (Kolkata), Ranchi (Jharkhand) and Coimbatore apart from the main campus at Belur Math.

The Coimbatore campus of the RKMVERI (Deemed University) is situated within the sprawling 300 acre campus of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Coimbatore (SRKV), which runs about sixteen educational institutions and many rural & youth oriented programmes. Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya is a branch centre of the well known world-wide organization Ramakrishna Mission.

1. Location :
Faculty of Agriculture, Rural and Tribal Development (ARTD) was established in August 2014 as Faculty of Agricultural Education and Research (FAR) at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Campus, Coimbatore as an ‘off-campus’ centre of the RKMVERI (Deemed University).  The institution is located 19 Kms from Coimbatore city, on the highway to Ootacamund and is set in a serene environment spread over nearly 300 acres.  The Faculty of ARTD is one among the sixteen educational institutions of the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya which has grown into a comprehensive and reputed educational campus catering to the needs of thousands of students from various socio-cultural and economic backgrounds imparting education in various streams.

2. Genesis

Faculty of Agriculture, Rural and Tribal Development (ARTD) was started in the year 2014 as Faculty of Agricultural Education and Research (FAR). Faculty of ARTD also runs Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development (IARD) (affiliated to TNAU) which offers Diploma in Agriculture for the past 60 years. This being the case the Faculty of ARTD has fully furnished basic infrastructural facilities and other resources.

3. Aims

The new Faculty is meant to provide quality education in rural and tribal development for a industrially and socially relevant, meaningful and self-supporting life to youth and train them to cater to the needs of economically poor and socially underprivileged sections of the society. A unique feature of the programmes/courses under this faculty, common to all the programmes/courses under the University, is to provide values-based and higher goal-oriented education.
