FDMSE, RKMVERI Coimbatore campus organized a two-day Workshop on Screen Readers and Accessible E-Pub Books Development for the Teacher Trainees of B.Ed. and M.Ed. Spl.Edn (V.I) on 29th & 30th November 2023. The workshop started by invoking the blessings of Almighty by the Teacher Trainees.
On the first day, i.e 29th November 2023, the External Expert Sri. Shankar Subbiah, Accessibility and Assistive Technology Consultant, Director, AGATE INFOTEK, Chennai taught the keyboard orientation to the participants in blindfolded situation. The accessibility features of Android devices such as Talk back, Voice Assistant, voiceover etc., were taught to the trainees. Sri. G. Kumaresan, Outreach and Training Consultant (South India), Bookshare, Chennai presented a detailed description and hands on experience on various Mobile Apps to the participants. Accessibility features for windows like magnification, color correction, color accessibility mode and large mouse pointer and other features were also oriented to them.
On the second day, 30th November 2023, Sri. G. Kumaresan, taught the use of Non Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) software for the visually impaired. Along with the functioning of the shortcut keys, he also oriented about the other Text to speech engines (TTS) for windows, JAWS (Job Access with Speech) and Super Nova. Both the experts also gave training to them on the creation of ‘Accessible E-Books’ through step by step procedure which would help the individuals with visually impairment and learning disability to access the books in easy manner. Information about membership details of Online libraries like Sugamya Pusthakalaya, Book Share and Daisy was also given to them.
A total of 10 teacher trainees (Female – 9 & Male – 1) were benefitted through this workshop. Dr. S. Parween, Assistant Professor, FDMSE coordinated the event.
