FDMSE, RKMVERI (Deemed University), Coimbatore Campus organised One-day awareness program on “Higher Education Opportunities and Job Avenues for Students with Hearing Impairment” – 30 Mar 2023

On 30/03/2023 the inaugural programme started with prayer song at FDMSE, RKMVERI (Deemed University), Coimbatore Campus. Mrs. S. N. Hamsapriya, Assistant Professor, Department of Hearing Impairment welcomed the gathering. The orientation about the programme was given by Dr. M. Sumathi, Assistant Professor and chief guest address was delivered by Dr. K. Sathiya Priya, HOD i/c, Dr. M. G. R Janaki College of Arts and Science, Chennai. During her speech, she highlighted the importance of education and how it should be applied for the benefit of people in the society. Swami Nirmaleshananda, Assistant Administrative Head, RKMVERI (Deemed University), Coimbatore Campus given the presidential address and he briefed about the value of doing good deeds for the empowerment of the people in need. The inaugural programme end with vote of thanks given by Mrs. D. Seshasri, Speech language pathologist and audiologist, RKMVERI (Deemed University), Coimbatore Campus. Thirty-five participants include students with hearing impairment, teachers and parents were participated in the programme.

The Session I was conducted from 11: 00 am to 1:00 pm in room. no. 4, Academic block, RKMVERI (Deemed University), Coimbatore Campus. The resource person Dr. K. Sathiya Priya, HOD i/c, Dr. M. G. R Janaki College of Arts and Science, Chennai has taken the session on ‘Higher Education Opportunities for students with hearing impairment’. She oriented the students and parents about the importance of higher education and the available educational opportunities for students with hearing impairment. She also briefed about the recent approach of inclusive education at colleges and universities which helps the students with hearing impairment to learn along with hearing students. She highlighted how the successful inclusive education system should be implemented in colleges and universities. It was also arranged for an online video interaction with the student with hearing impairment Ms. Renu who is placed in an IT company, Chennai. She shared her success story with the participants and also she clarified the question and answers of the students. The session ended at 1:00 pm after discussing clarification with the resource person.

The session II was conducted at 2:00 pm in room. no. 4, Academic block, RKMVERI (Deemed University), Coimbatore Campus by Mr. S. Shankar Subbiah, Director, Agate infotech, Chennai. He has taken a session on, ’Employment avenues for people with hearing impairment’. He highlighted the importance of job-related skills and the ways to develop the knowledge and skills. He explained about the various job opportunities available for people with hearing impairment at Government sectors, Private companies and also about entrepreneurship and self-employment. He shared the resources; newspapers, websites and links which helps them to identify the suitable job opportunities according to the needs and skills of people with hearing impairment. He emphasizes the importance of parents, teachers and the student’s role to empower the people with hearing impairment. At the end he interacted with the parents, the teachers and the students to clarify the questions. The programme ends at 4:00 pm with the vote of thanks.
