Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, Faculty of General and Adapted Physical Education and Yoga organised the Special Teachers Convention Programme & Special Olympics – Young Athlete Training & Capacity Building Programme on 31st October, 2023 which introduces children with developmental disabilities from the age of two through seven to sports and prepares them for competitions once they turn eight. The programme is solely participation-based, and there are no competitive events during it. The programme was started with the games as listed below:
- Station 1: Hit for accuracy
- Station 2: Badminton up-contest
- Station 3: Table tennis up-contest
- Station 4: Hitting stump
- Station 5: Throw for accuracy
- Station 6: Football dribbling
- Station 7: Kick for accuracy
- Station 8: Basketball shooting
- Station 9: Basketball dribbling
- Station 10: Puck shoot
- Station 11: Mobility and balance
- Station 12: Depth jump
Over 12 playing stations with 40 volunteers were arranged for the participants. A total of 73 athletes with various developmental disabilities and their parents and teachers participated in the event and benefited. The athletes were from different places in Coimbatore. In the valedictory function, Swami Veerahananda Maharaj, Assistant Administrative Head, RKMVERI, and Dr. R. Giridharan, Associate Professor and Head of RKMVERI GAPEY were the chief guests. At the end of the programme, all the athletes were honoured with medals and certificates.
