In connection with the Theme of WHO 2024 ‘Ear and Hearing Care for All’ and as a part of an extension activity ‘Hearing Screening Camp – 2024’ was organised by Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education – Department of Hearing Impairment, Coimbatore campus on 24th February, 2024. Identification of the children with special needs who are at high risk of hearing loss was the main objective of this screening camp.

The screening process carried out with the Registration of participants followed by recording Case History, Otoscopic Examination, Tunning Fork Test, Otoacoustic Emission Test, Pure Tone Audiometric Evaluation (screening). Based on the results, parents were provided Guidance and counselling. The profiling was done for further processing of data. The staff members of the department of Hearing Impairment along with teacher trainees conducted various screening assessment activities. Children with special needs from different therapy units of FDMSE Premises and children with special needs from T. A. T. Kalanilayam Middle School within Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya campus participated in the Hearing Screening Camp. The details are as follows:

Sixty two children with disabilities studying in various institutions of Vidyalaya including visual impairment, hearing impairment and intellectual disability were benefitted from this camp. Out of 62 children with disabilities 40 were boys and 22 were girls. Six children with disabilities were identified at high risk of hearing loss and given further referral for detailed Audiological Evaluation.
