Department of Visual Impairment, FDMSE, RKMVERI (Deemed University), Coimbatore Campus organised a Vision Screening Camp in collaboration with Aravind Eye Hospital, Peelamedu, Coimbatore on 19 April 2023. A team including Dr. Minnu Lakshmi, Pediatric Ophthalmologist, Mrs. Jeyanthi Nirmal, Vision Rehabilitationist, Mrs. S. Kumutha, Camp Organiser, Sis. S. Pavithra, Refractionist, Sis. S. Velanganni, Optist Trainee along with the teacher trainees of Department of Visual Impairment conducted the camp. Refraction test using Snellen chart, different functional vision assessments and prescription of medicines and eye glasses were carried out in the Vision screening camp. Identification of the individuals who are at risk of vision loss was the main objective of the camp.
In connection with the Theme of WHO ‘Ear and Hearing Care for All’ and as a part of an extension activity ‘Hearing Screening Camp – 2023’ was organised by Department of Hearing Impairment, FDMSE, RKMVERI (Deemed University), Coimbatore Campus on 19 April 2023. Identification of the individuals who are at high risk of hearing loss was the main objective of this screening camp. The screening process carried out with the Registration of participants followed by recording Case History, Otoscopic Assessment, Tunning Fork Test, Otoacoustic Emission, Pure Tone Audiometric Evaluationand providing Guidance and counselling. The profiling was done for further processing of data. The entire staff members of the department of Hearing Impairment along with teacher trainees conducted various screening assessment activities.
Children with special needs from different units such as Physiotherapy unit, Occupational therapy, Speech therapy, Low Vision Unit, Pre vocational and Vocational units of FDMSE Premises and the individuals from six different institutions within Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya campus participated in the Vision Screening and Hearing Screening Camp. Seventy-five individuals (52 Male and 23 Female) individuals with disabilities studying and working in various Vidyalaya institutions including visually impaired, hearing impaired and intellectually challenged were benefited out of this camp. Out of which 46 individuals were children, 23 individuals were adults. Fifteen individuals who have vision problems were suggested for further referrals and twelve individuals who were identified at high risk of hearing loss were given further referral for detailed Audiological Evaluation.
